Kevin Kilbane reckons Germany boss Jogi Low's "under serious pressure"

There have been a few shocks in the 2018 World Cup so far, but none bigger than Germany's group stage exit.

Defeat by an exciting Mexico side in their opener was a surprise, before Joachim Low's side fought back to beat a resolute Sweden thanks to Toni Kroos' outstanding late, late winner.

The Germans would have been expected to take the momentum from that win into their final game against a South Korea side who had been bottom of the group - albeit not yet mathematically eliminated from the equation when it came to progression to the last-16.

But in the shock of all shocks, reigning World Cup winners Germany who had always advanced past the opening round at the tournament since 1938 stuttered and lost 2-0 to the Taeguk Warriors, leaving them not only out of the World Cup but bottom of a pool they were expected to top.

Kevin Kilbane was at the stadium today and spoke to Dave McIntyre about his own thoughts and he believes manager Joachim Low will now be under serious pressure, despite being on a deal that takes him up to the 2022 World Cup.

"I think he's under serious pressure," he said.

"I was talking to the German press before the game and there was a lot suggesting that they wanted to go with the squad that won the Confederations Cup last year.

"They didn't want the Ozils, they didn't want the Reuses because essentially the team that went to the Confed Cup was the under-23 team."

Kevin added that the German press' contention was that the younger squad would "have the energy and real enthusiasm" missing from the ranks of the the now former reigning world champions.

"You're looking at it and I think it does put a lot of pressure on Jogi Low," he said, describing Germany's overall performance as "average".

"It almost feels like this great German side that were brilliant in the last World Cup, that have been so good for such a long time now, it seems like it's the end of the road for a lot of those players."
