Manchester United target James Maddison will not be moving - Rodgers

Leicester City manager Brendan Rodgers has insisted that playmaker James Maddison will not be leaving the club in the January transfer window.

The news may come as a disappointment to Manchester United who were willing to splash out tens of millions on the 23-year-old, according to widespread reports in England this week.

Rodgers was quizzed today about his desire to keep Maddison at the King Power Stadium.

"Yes," replied Rodgers when asked if he is confident that Maddison will remain with the club this month.

"No, there's no message [for Manchester United].

"It's a month and pre-January there's lots of speculation around lots of our players, which is great because they're talented and it means they and the team are doing very, very well but nobody will leave here in January. That's for sure."

The ex-Celtic manager has guided the Foxes into second place in the Premier League, above the champions Manchester City and behind runaway leaders Liverpool.

Rodgers is hoping to bring in some reinforcements rather than allow players to leave.

"We want to add to the squad if we can," added the Antrim native. "It's been a fantastic first part of the season for us.

"We've started the second well so we want to continue with that rhythm and that continuity with the players, developing them, developing the team and then see where we arrive at the end of the season."

There were some reports that the Old Trafford club would offer midfielder Jesse Lingard plus £50 million in an attempt to prise Maddison away from Leicester.

Rodgers rubbished those reports.

"It's all talk and speculation. I don't talk about speculation and gossip," said Rodgers.

"James is a very, very talented player, a wonderful player and he will be here in January and beyond."

Rodgers also confirmed that Maddison and his representatives are currently in talks with the club over a new contract.

The one-time-capped England international signed from Norwich in July 2018 for a fee of up to £24 million and that initial contract is not due to expire until the summer of 2023.
