Mayo heartache goes on as Tyrone beat them to win fourth All-Ireland title

Tyrone are the 2021 All-Ireland Senior Football champions and have won the Sam Maguire for the fourth time.

They've beaten Mayo 2-14 to 0-15 at Croke Park this afternoon.

They say goals win games and this result was an example of that.

Cathal McShane and Darren McCurry scored the Tyrone goals in the second half after Ryan O'Donoghue missed a penalty.

The game started out pretty tit for tat with both sides patient while on the attack but also being brave while going for it.

Mayo had a massive goal chance after 15 minutes when Niall Morgan and Niall Sludden denied Brian Walsh and Conor Loftus respectively.

In the 26th minute, Ronan McNamee produced a brilliant block to deny Aidan O'Shea who was really struggling to get into the game at this stage.

The Ulstermen went in 0-10 to 0-8 up at half-time with the game on a real knife edge.

Then after just five minutes of the second half Mayo were awarded a penalty as Frank Burns picked the ball off the ground as a Ryan O'Donoghue shot dropped short.

O'Donoghue then stepped up to take it, this would have put them a point up, he dummied Niall Morgan and went for the top right corner but his shot went wide off the outside of the post.

What a moment.

Then in the 47th minute, Tyrone had their best chance on goal, and unlike Mayo they took it.

Conor Myler sent a diagonal ball into Cathal McShane in the square and the substitute who just loves to come on and score flicked it into the back of the net to send Tyrone 1-10 to 0-9 ahead.

Just over 10 minutes later Tyrone found the back of the net again, this time with an incredible team goal.

Niall Morgan's kick-out was caught beautifully by Con Kilpatrick in the middle of the field.

He sent it into space for Conor McKenna who laid it off to Darren McCurry who fisted it home.

Tyrone now lead 2-10 to 0-11 with just over 10 minutes to go and it was over for Mayo who were left to rue their missed opportunities and inability to take their chances.

The win for Tyrone completes a remarkable first year in management for Brian Dooher and Feargal Logan and what a comeback after being knocked out of Ulster the first day of asking in 2020.
