As we look ahead to day four at Tokyo 2020, we must also take time to look at those competing on day three.

One of the success stories was Nhat Nguyen, the 21-year-old Dubliner who got through the last-32 of the men's singles badminton.

"I am happy to be able to walk off the court as a winner," he said afterwards, "I am very grateful for the support that I had today.

"It was overwhelming walking out to all the staff there with me; my physio, my coach and a couple of others in support as well.

"I wanted to give my all for every single point, especially for the support I was given. I was happy I was able to do that even though I didn’t play my best, I am happy that I took the win.

“I feel I shook off the nerves there than rather playing free and playing my style so it was just getting the job done and I was happy that I crossed that line. I have a day to rest with late practise tomorrow."

Brendan Irvine

One of the other stories of the day was Belfast flyweight boxer Brendan Irvine, who was beaten on points by Filipino Carlos Paalam.

"What can I do? That's boxing, this stuff happens every day," Irvine told RTE.

"The better man won on the day. I did think it was a close fight and I probably could have got a result, but that is just the way it goes.

"It's been a rollercoaster getting here, but I am proud to have left it all in the ring and given it my all. There is physically nothing I could have done more.

"Now it's time to pick myself up and support the rest of the team."
