New Ireland boss Stephen Kenny pays tribute to Mick McCarthy

The new Republic of Ireland manager Stephen Kenny has made his first public remarks since that appointing was exclusively revealed by Off The Ball on Saturday afternoon.

Be it through the circumstances in which he has taken on the role or the manner of his first 'press conference' as Republic of Ireland boss, nothing of the last 24-hours can be regarded as usual for Stephen Kenny.

Without a firm date in mind about when his first match as manager of Ireland will take place, the job nevertheless starts now for the former Dundalk boss.

Speaking to Football Association of Ireland's in-house media channel, Stephen Kenny explained his excitement for the role and the "unprecedented" year that lies ahead. Furthermore, he paid tribute to the departing Mick McCarthy.

"Mick has had a tremendous career as captain of Ireland and as manager on two occasions," remarked Kenny. "He leaves a legacy behind him and it's just unfortunate with the cancellation of matches, it's been an unfortunate situation.

"He's revered in Ireland."

In light of Saturday's appointment, Off The Ball spoke with two former internationals Damien Delaney and Gary Breen about their thoughts on Mick McCarthy's exit, and Kenny's arrival.

A fiery debate between two players with varying opinions over whether McCarthy's second tenure as manager ought to be looked upon favourably, you can catch back up with that here.

Furthermore, you can find Brian Kerr's thoughts on Mick McCarthy's departure and what Kenny ought to be ready for in taking on the role of senior manager on the OTB website.

Interim FAI CEO Gary Owens also spoke to Off The Ball about the decision on Sunday. You can also see what McCarthy had to say upon his departing from the role of Ireland manager here.
