'Unacceptable, cowardly and misguided' | Hamilton on Hungary's LGBTQ+ laws

Lewis Hamilton has added his support to those opposed to the anti-LGBTQ+ laws being implemented by the Hungarian government.

Hamilton is in the country this week ahead of the Hungarian Grand Prix this weekend.

There has been outrage at the decisions being taken by Viktor Orban's government in recent months.

Much of the public anger centres on a law passed last month, banning what government described as 'promotion' of LGBTQ+ information to children.

The outpouring of opposition to the legislation has led to the Prime Minister suggesting that a referendum will be held on the legislation.

Government decisions have led to widespread international condemnation, with the European Commission recently launching legal action against the government.

Thousands attended a Pride march held in Budapest last weekend.

Support

Ahead of this weekend's race, Hamilton today posted to Instagram to add his voice to those opposed to the government's approach.

"To all in this beautiful country, Hungary," he began.

"Ahead of the Grand Prix this weekend, I want to share my support for those affected by the governments' anti LGBTQ+ law.

"It is unacceptable, cowardly and misguiding for those in power suggest such a law.

"Everyone deserves to have the freedom to be themselves, no matter who they love or how they identify.

"I urge the people of Hungary to vote in the upcoming referendum to protect the rights of the LGBTQ+ community, they need our support now more than ever.

"Please show love for those around you because love will always win. Sending you positivity."

Hamilton comes into the weekend's action second in the drivers championship, eight points behind Red Bull's Max Verstappen.

The Mercedes driver is also set to learn if he'll face any further action over his crash with Verstappen at the British Grand Prix.

The pair are due to appear before Formula One bosses today.
