UEFA open proceedings against FA after ugly Euro 2020 final scenes

UEFA has opened disciplinary proceedings against the English FA following the scenes that marred the Euro 2020 final.

Thousands of ticketless fans stormed Wembley Stadium for the game on July 11, which England lost on penalties to Italy.

26 arrests were made by the London Metropolitan Police around the stadium, almost half of the 51 arrested in connection with final events across London that day.

Regardless, the police presence at Wembley was roundly criticised in the aftermath of the final, with journalist Gabriele Marcotti telling OTB Sports, "I can't deal with the police continually saying how clever they are, and that they have this wonderful football intelligence, or whatever. Because on the day, you weren't there. A lot of bad things happened, a lot of worse things could have happened, and you need to do a full inquiry as well.

"You're very good at going to people at the Sarah Everard vigil, taking candles off middle-aged women and carting them away - how about you man up and go and deal with it?

"Don't tell me that there the minimum security requirement was 300 and there 450 there. Maybe you're not that smart, maybe all your clever people in crowd control got that one wrong. How about you come out and own it?"

In response to the criticism, the Met claimed that if not for them, the final was in danger of being abandoned.

Following an initial investigation, UEFA is now charging the FA with a potential violation relating to a lack of order from its supporters.

On the day of the final, UEFA announced that it was imposing a two-game stadium ban on Hungary as a result of the frequent homophobic and racist behaviour during their three home matches at the Puskas Arena during the Euros.

UEFA statement:

Following an investigation conducted by a UEFA Ethics and Disciplinary Inspector into the events involving supporters which occurred inside and around the stadium during the UEFA EURO 2020 final match between the national teams of Italy and England played on 11 July at Wembley Stadium, London, disciplinary proceedings have been opened against the English Football Association for a potential violation of Article 16(2)(h) of the UEFA Disciplinary Regulations for a lack of order or discipline by its supporters.

Further information on this matter will be made available in due course.
