Three men arrested on the suspicion of possessing flares at Anfield

Merseyside Police has confirmed that three men were arrested at yesterday'ss Premier League game at Anfield.

Liverpool and Manchester City played out a cracking 2-2 draw.

However, the game has been somewhat overshadowed by incidents off the field.

Manchester City have made a complaint after claims that members of their backroom staff were spat at.

An investigation is believed to be underway.

This morning, however, it has emerged that three fans have been arrested.

A statement from Merseyside Police said that the men - aged 19, 35 and 38 - were taken into custody yesterday.

"At around 3.05pm, three men were identified by officers as having possession of flares in the Anfield Road area, one of which was thrown, causing no damage or injury.

"All were detained and have been arrested and taken into custody."

Assistant chief constable Rob Carden added: "A swift response from our officers on the ground resulted in three arrests and the confiscation of flares which could have caused serious injuries and damage.

"We have worked closely with both clubs in an extensive policing plan for this fixture, and it's great to see the vast majority of supporters enjoying the day.

"Those people involved in such behaviour aren't genuine supporters, but the impact of their actions is damaging to those who attend every game to watch their team play.

"That they were quickly identified and detained is credit to the diligence of those officers present."

The game itself was a major talking point, with both sides producing good performances.

It looked as though Mo Salah's wonder goal had set Liverpool on course for all three points.

However, Kevin De Bruyne struck ten minutes from time to secure the visitors a point.

The result means Chelsea sit top of a bunched table heading into the international break.

They're a point clear of Liverpool, with City alongside Manchester United, Everton and Brighton a point further back.
