Reports: Davy Fitzgerald to be named Galway hurling manager

Davy Fitzgerald is set to be appointed the new Galway senior hurling manager.

Clare's 2013 All Ireland-winning boss will take over from Shane O'Neill, who stepped down in early September after two years in charge.

The Clare Echo have claimed that Fitzgerald's appointment will be confirmed by Wednesday night.

Fitzgerald left his last role as Wexford manager in July, following their All Ireland qualifier exit at the hands of his native Clare. The Sixmilebridge man had been in charge for five years, leading the Model County to a memorable Leinster title win in 2019.

Galway's 2017 All Ireland-winning manager Micheál Donoghue had been among the contenders to replace O'Neill, but told the county board he would not be in a position to return.

It's believed Fitzgerald was among 5-6 candidates interviewed for the Galway job last week.

His backroom team will reportedly contain fellow Clare man Louis Mulqueen, who worked under Ger Loughnane in Galway in 2007.

Fergal Lynch, Michael Browne and Mike Deegan will also be on Fitzgerald's Banner-heavy ticket.

His impending appointment hasn't been roundly welcomed, however.

Former Tribesmen goalkeeper James Skehill believes Fitzgerald's management style will not be a good fit for the county's hurlers.

He told OTB AM recently, "I think when he went to Wexford the county as a whole were looking for a bit of rejuvenation.

"The team were looking for a level of professionalism in management that they hadn't seen before and he brings that with him. I don't think Galway are in need of rejuvenation."

Skehill added, "I don't think the Galway players would take to a dictatorship too handy."
