Magical takes another Tattersalls Gold Cup with ease

The Aidan O'Brien trained Magical took the feature event on Sunday at The Curragh, the Tattersalls Gold Cup.

There wasn't a moment's worry for those brave enough to back her at 2/9 as Wayne Lordan was prominent throughout winning easily from stablemate Sir Dragonet under returning Epsom winning rider Emmett MacNamara.

The win on Sunday takes the mare's lifetime Group One tally to six, her second this season having won the Pretty Polly Stakes at the same track and trip on seasonal return at the end of June.

Jockey Wayne Lordan was suitably impressed: "I thought in the last half-furlong she wasn't even killing herself. She is a top-class filly and I'm just delighted to get the ride on her.

"She's very easy to ride and has a very powerful stride. From the minute you sit on her to the minute you get off she feels like she has a presence."

It's a treat for fans to see Magical in action again, albeit only through a television screen given the coronavirus restrictions. The daughter of Galileo and Halfway to Heaven was penciled in for a date with Coolmore upcoming sire No Nay Never in the spring, but connections decided to keep her in training.

That decision has reaped rewards with two top-level success and the mare has plenty of options later in the season. Bookmakers cut her price for the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe and the Breeders Cup following her second Tattersalls Gold Cup success.

Magical has never beaten Enable and put in some of her lesser performances in France over the last two seasons, so avoiding John Gosden's star mare could be in the offing.

That still leaves Leopardstown for the Irish Champion Stakes or the Matron, Ascot on British Champions Day where she could go to either the Champions Stakes or the Fillies and Mares as well as a possible tilt at the Breeders Cup, where she finished second to Enable two seasons ago.

Enable is set to retire following her historic Arc bid, but where Magical goes next may well depend on where Aidan O'Brien's other potential superstar filly, Love goes.

Love has already won the 1000 Guineas and the Oaks and is currently second in the market behind enable for the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe.
