Lohan wants Clare to match "professional" set-ups of hurling big guns

Brian Lohan says he wants the Clare hurlers to try and match the "professional" set-ups of counties like Limerick.

The Clare GAA executive recommended a fresh three-year term for the Wolfe Tones man on Monday night, a tenure Lohan has told Clare FM he asked for himself.

"In inter-county hurling now there's an awful lot of work involved in it," Lohan told Morning Focus.

"It takes a bit of time to get your team together, and to get the advice - and the good advice, and professional advice - the board will be conscious of that, and are looking at the job that was done over the last two years.

"[They've] decided to give us the next three years to see if we can improve things."

During his first year at the helm, Lohan led Clare to an All Ireland quarter-final, where they were beaten by eventual finalists Waterford.

This year, they beat Waterford in the Munster quarter-finals, before a controversial loss to Tipperary.

Clare beat Wexford in the qualifiers, before again falling to an eventual All Ireland finalist in Cork.

"We felt that we had good players," Lohan said of his 2019 appointment, "Looking at set-ups around the country, you know, there is very professional set-ups out there.

"We probably needed to get to a different level, because the game is constantly moving on and we can see that over the weekend.

"We've seen the performance of the Limerick lads and how professional their set-up is and the kind of advice that they have access to.

"It's [about] trying to move it in Clare up to that kind of level. Because we think we have got the quality of players, and we think we have that kind of potential.

"But it takes a huge amount of hard work, obviously."

Lohan highlighted the analysis and advice necessary to compete with the top tier of hurling counties, but appears to hold no fear of the back-to-back All Ireland champions Limerick.

"They're just a serious set-up," he said, "But there'd be a lot of teams out there itching to get a shot at them, and we're hoping to be one of those teams.

"But look, obviously they're in great shape at the moment, they've got great players and a great set-up and very professional in all that stuff that we're reading about for the last couple of days."
