Limerick manager Kiely apologises to Galway over simulation comments

John Kiely has apologised for, and retracted, the comments he made regarding alleged simulation by Galway players.

The Limerick manager has told the Irish Examiner that the accusations contained within Sunday's post-match interview in Salthill were "not accurate or fair".

Kiely had just seen his side beaten for the first time in nearly two years, going down 0-26 to 1-17 in their Allianz Hurling League Division 1A meeting with the Tribesemen.

"When a player has the ball and they run at you and throw themselves on the ground and they are roaring and shouting, that's embarrassing," he said on Sunday, "And that's not part of the game".

"Simulation... some clear examples, a couple were very embarrassing.

"None of us want to see that brought in as part of our game."

Kiely, however, told the Examiner on Tuesday, "I should have paid more attention to my own performance and that of the team than to the opposition."

"At the time I was of the opinion that I had seen an incident that I wasn’t happy with: It was late in the game and very much to the forefront of my thoughts after the game.

“But over the last two days, I’ve been going through the video footage of the game and have had a very clear sight of those incidents I referred to.

"The bottom line is that what I thought I had seen was absolutely not the case.

“I wish to wholeheartedly retract those comments with regard to Galway and to apologise for them.

"It’s important that I set the record straight now that I’m certain that what I saw was not what I believed I had seen."

Galway legend Cyril Farrell told OTB Sports, "I was surprised really with the comments because Limerick are a good physical team and when you live by the sword, you have to die by the sword.

"He’s probably trying to get the message across that Limerick are being penalised too much for being physical.

"They do live on the edge and hurl on the edge but they will have to curtail their tackling because they can’t continue to give that amount of frees away."
