Jordan Jones set to miss Euro 2020 play-off final after Covid breach

Northern Ireland international Jordan Jones will miss the Euro 2020 play-off final against Slovakia after he broke Covid-19 regulations to attend a party.

The Rangers midfielder and team-mate George Edmundson have been suspended by the club and must self-isolate for 14 days after they were found to have attended a "private gathering with others outside of their household".

Ian Baraclough's team face the side that knocked the Republic of Ireland out of the play-offs, in the decider at Windsor Park in 10 days time which would rule Jones out of the game.

The police have issued ten fixed covid penalty notices to people who were discovered at the party in question and the club says that it is investigating the two players.

"Around 1.25am on Monday, 2 November, we received a report of a houseparty in Devonshire Terrace in Glasgow," said a Police Scotland spokesperson.

"Officers attended and ten people were issued with Fixed Penalty Notices. Advice was given and the party was dispersed."

After the story emerged, the club released a statement which reads: "Rangers have been made aware of an incident last night involving two of our players, Jordan Jones and George Edmundson.

"Both players breached covid regulations by attending a private gathering with others outside of their household.

"We can confirm that both players will be suspended pending an internal investigation. On the instruction of Dr Mark Waller, the players will also self isolate for 14 days."

Rangers Managing Director, Stewart Robertson added: "The Chairman Douglas Park, Ross Wilson, Steven Gerrard and I discussed this matter as soon as it was brought to our attention.

"We are completely aligned in our action and the standards that are being set at Rangers.

"We will not tolerate behaviour that does not follow those standards and it is totally unacceptable for any of our players to be involved in anything that puts at risk the excellent protocols that have been put in place at Rangers."

Jones has been capped 11 times by Northern Ireland since making his debut under the previous manager Michael O'Neill and became a regular starter before injuring his knee in September last year.

Since his return he came off the bench in the play-off semi-final win against Bosnia and Herzegovina last month and he played the full 90 minutes of Northern Ireland's UEFA Nations League defeat to Austria three days later.
