Ireland defender Jimmy Dunne ready to go on a new journey with QPR

Republic of Ireland under-21 international Jimmy Dunne has signed for Queens Park Rangers.

The Dundalk native has put pen to paper on a three-year deal with the option of a fourth at Loftus Road having been released by Burnley.

Dunne had spent the past five seasons at the Premier League club having come through the youth system at Manchester United. He's also been courted by the likes of Preston since finding out his contract would not be renewed.

Following loan spells at Barrow, Accrington Stanley, Hearts, Sunderland and Fleetwood Town, Dunne scored on his Premier League debut in September of 2020.

"The loan spells were really good for me," Dunne said, "But where I am now I believe it is important to go on a journey with someone."

"I really want to come here and be part of the club. From the outside looking in, this looks like a really good environment to be part of."

Dunne has received a number of senior Ireland call-ups, dating back to his time at Hearts, but he's yet to make his senior debut.

A run of seven wins in their last eleven games saw QPR finish ninth in the Championship last season, and just nine points off the playoffs.

"It's a massive step for me", Dunne told the Rangers website.

"With the push that the lads had during the second half of last season it would be nice to be part of something like that this season."

Dunne added, "This league is going to test me and there is a lot of work for me to do, but if I can concentrate on my defending, I am sure the ball playing will follow."

His new manager Mark Warburton said, "Jimmy is a very talented player.

"He can play anywhere across the back three - left, right or centre - and that gives us great flexibility.

"Once again, he has great physicality, he looks after the ball well and plays with a real passion and energy.

"If he trains well he will get his chance in the side and that is what he is here to do."
