Greta Streimikyte sets new European best in winning gold in Poland

Greta Streimikyte claimed gold in the European Para-Athletics Championships in Bydgoszcz on Tuesday night.

The Clonliffe Harriers member set a new European record time of 4:29.38 to win the 1500m T-13 final.

It also means Streimikyte successfully defended the medal she won in Berlin three years ago.

"We decided that we would run from the front and that it would be great practice for Tokyo and it all worked out," she said after the race.

Streimikyte added, "The two Russian girls had beaten me in the past a good couple of times so I am delighted that this time I was lucky enough to beat them."

She's set the bar for the rest of the Irish team competing in Poland this week.

Mary Fitzgerald competes in the shot put F40 on Wednesday, while the following day Jordan Lee tackles the high jump T47.

Saturday in Bydgoszcz is Ireland's busiest, with Michael McKillop and David Leavy going in the 1500m T38, while Niamh McCarthy competes in the discus F41.
