Giggs charged with assaulting two women, Page to lead Wales at Euro 2020

The Football Association of Wales has confirmed that Robert Page will lead the national team at Euro 2020 after Ryan Giggs was charged with assault.

Wales head coach Giggs has been charged with assaulting his ex-girlfriend Kate Greville.

The incident occurred at his home in Worsley, Greater Manchester in November 0f 2020.

47-year old Giggs is accused of causing actual bodily harm to the PR professional.

The former Manchester United winger faces an additional charge of coercive and controlling behaviour between December 2017 and November 2020.

Giggs has also been charged with the common assault of a woman in her 20's during the same alleged incident at his home last year.

He will appear at Manchester and Salford Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday (April 28) where he intends to plead not guilty.

In a statement, Giggs said, "I have full respect for due process of law and understand seriousness of allegations.

"I will plead not guilty in court and look forward to clearing my name.

"I would like to wish Robert Page, coaching staff, players and supporters every success at the Euros this summer."

Page has been in charge of the Wales team since November when investigations began into the alleged incident.

The ex-defender, capped 41 times for his country, will spearhead their Group A campaign in the summer.

They open up against Switzerland in Baku on June 12, before a game against Turkey in the Azeri capital on four days later. They complete the group stage by playing Italy in Rome on June 20.

"An FAW Board meeting will be convened to discuss these developments and its impact on the Association and the National Team," a statement read.

Giggs is also a co-owner of English League Two side, Salford City.

In a statement, the Crown Prosecution Service said, "We have authorised Greater Manchester Police to charge Ryan Giggs with engaging in behaviour which was controlling or coercive and assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

“A charge of assault by beating relating to a second woman has also been authorised.

“The CPS made the decision to charge Mr Giggs after reviewing a file of evidence from Greater Manchester Police.

“Criminal proceedings are active and nothing should be published that could jeopardise the defendant’s right to a fair trial.”

FAW statement:

The Football Association of Wales has noted the decision of The Crown Prosecution Service to proceed with charging Ryan Giggs, the Men's National Team Manager.

In light of this decision, the FAW can confirm that Robert Page will assume the role of Cymru Men's National Team manager for this summer's EURO 2020 tournament and will be assisted by Albert Stuivenberg.

An FAW Board meeting will be convened to discuss these developments and its impact on the Association and the National Team.

The FAW will not be making any further comment at this current time.
