FAI confirm Bulgaria Nations League game will be played in Sofia

The FAI have confirmed that the Republic of Ireland’s Nations League game with Bulgaria will be played in Sofia.

There had been doubt the game could go ahead as planned on September 3rd, as Bulgaria is not currently on Ireland’s ‘green’ travel list.

However, an exemption has been made for the squad to travel for a game that goes ahead behind closed doors.

The game will be Stephen Kenny's first in charge of his country. Finland will visit the Aviva Stadium three-days later.

Under current Government guidelines, such a trip would mean the Irish party would have to quarantine upon their return.

OTB Sports have contacted the Department of Foreign Affairs to ascertain how that exemption has been granted and awaits their response.

Bulgaria have been allowing restricted numbers of fans into domestic games since June, but UEFA have decreed that all of September's international matches be played without fans.

Bulgarian media report that "UEFA clarifies that the teams receive a "green corridor" that allows them to travel to the respective countries, although there are restrictions on travel and quarantine under local law."

Neutral venues of Hungary, Cyprus, Poland and Greece had been under consideration.
