Eddie Howe takes pay cut as Bournemouth furlough staff

Bournemouth manager Eddie Howe has become the first Premier League boss to take a pay cut because of football's coronavirus-related shutdown.

The English south coast side say Howe along with chief executive Neill Blake, first-team technical director Richard Hughes, and Howe's assistant manager Jason Tindall have all taken "significant, voluntary pay cuts for the entirety of this uncertain time."

Football in England is on hold until April 30 at the earliest, but a summer conclusion to the season is looking more and more likely - provided it's safe to do so.

Bournemouth have also joined the likes of Newcastle United, Tottenham Hotspur and Norwich City in furloughing staff for the remainder of the crisis.

The exact number of staff hasn't been specified, but Bournemouth say they're from all areas of the club.

The decision to furlough those staff has been made, they say, "To safeguard the financial stability of the club during what is such an uncertain period, not only in football but for businesses in all industries across the world.

"Furloughed employees – all of whose roles have been affected by the closure of Vitality Stadium and the club’s other sites – will be on leave for a minimum of three weeks under the UK government's coronavirus job retention scheme, which is currently set to run until Sunday 31st May."

The UK government's scheme covers 80% of an employees wage, up to £2,500 a month.

Bournemouth concede, "There is no script for moments like this. No tactics and no set plays to find a winning formula.

"But as a board we are continually looking at ways to ensure the future of the club and our employees is protected when the season returns."
