Dual clash avoided as Galway agree to move Cork camogie fixture

The Galway Camogie Board has agreed to change the date of their All Ireland Championship group fixture with Cork.

The Group 1 encounter was due to be played on November 7th, on the same day as the Cork footballers are due to play Kerry.

Strike action from the Cork players had been mooted if fixture clashes continued.

Cork full-back and Women's GPA representative Laura Treacy told Red FM this week, "It literally takes just a bit of communication for this not to happen and for the bad publicity going out again.

"I don't know if it has to go down the route of a total strike of Cork camogie and ladies football needs to come into play. Does it have to be something so dramatic as that in order for change to happen? I would hope not.

"The girls are great, they give their all to both codes, we're trying to stick up for the five involved and trying to get it sorted early so it's not an issue during the championship...but I'm just hoping it can be resolved before it becomes a bigger issue than it needs to be.

"It should be a case that something like that (a strike) needs to happen but it's something it's something I would be personally willing to do and a lot of the girls involved with Cork senior camogie, I can speak on behalf of them, that they'd be happy to do something like that because it's something that is happening not just in Cork.

"It's happening in Tipperary, it's happening in different counties as well and happening so frequently, every year and it's time that if something dramatic needs to be done and we just have to sit out those fixture clashes then I wouldn't rule it out."

Camogie Association statement:

In relation to ongoing work by the Camogie Association over the past number of weeks to avoid fixture clashes with LGFA fixtures where possible, we are pleased to confirm that we have been able to find a solution to avoid a clash on Saturday November 7th for this particular fixture.

The Camogie Association are happy to respond positively to a request from Galway Camogie Board and can confirm that the Liberty Insurance All-Ireland Senior Championship Group 1 fixture between Galway versus Cork, originally scheduled for Saturday November 7th has now been re-arranged for Sunday November 8th to avoid a clash with a Cork LGFA fixture.

We thank Galway Camogie Board and their management team for their co-operation on this matter.

We will continue to work with our colleagues in Camogie County Boards and with the LGFA to facilitate dual players where possible within the current fixtures schedule.

We remind all members to comply with the latest COVID-19 Return to Play Protocols and to minimise their social contacts.
