Damian de Allende says the burns suffered by he and three of his teammates was the result of a petrol can explosion.

De Allende, along with teammates RG Snyman, Mike Haley and CJ Stander were all left with "superficial burns" after an accident with a fire-pit at the weekend.

Snyman and De Allende came off worse in the accident, and still need to see a specialist following burns to their face, hands and feet, while Haley and Stander have been able to resume training after burning their hands.

Speaking to South African outlet Supersport, Damian De Allende says the incident happened after one of the four poured petrol onto the fire.

"We were just sitting around the fire and one of the boys threw a bit of petrol over the fire and then it caught his hand and he just tried to put it down on the floor and then the whole thing caught alight and exploded," he said.

The 29-year-old says they were relieved to find out their burns weren't as bad as first feared, adding that they should be able to return to action in the coming weeks.

"Yeah that’s what we’ve been saying, they thought it was a lot worse when we went into hospital on Saturday night but when we saw the specialist on Sunday he said it wasn’t as bad as they got told.

"We should be okay in a few weeks hopefully," Damian de Allende added.

Both Snyman and de Allende were included in the South African squad for the upcoming British and Irish Lions series, with the province adding that they are still expected to link up with the national side when the domestic season ends.

The pair look highly unlikely to feature for the province again this season, with Snyman yet to feature since tearing his cruciate ligament just seven minutes into his debut for the side last August.

Munster will be hopeful CJ Stander is fit enough to play in their final Rainbow Cup regular-season game this Friday night against Zebre, which could potentially be his final game for the province.

Munster need to beat the Italian side, and also hope Benetton slip up against the Ospreys, in order to make this month's final against the South African representatives.
