Current placings to decide European qualification if La Liga cannot finish

The Spanish Football Federation have proposed that if the current La Liga season cannot be completed then European places would be decided by current standings.

That would mean Barcelona, Real Madrid, Sevilla and Real Sociedad would qualify for next season’s Champions League.

Europa League places would go to Getafe, Atletico Madrid and Copa del Rey finalists Athletic Bilbao.

However, if the Copa del Rey final is played and Athletic lose, then the third Europa League spot would go to the side 7th in La Liga - which is Valencia.

The proposal only takes in Spain’s commitments to UEFA, and would not see Barcelona crowned champions.

However, La Liga officials are believed to disagree with the proposals with AS reporting it would mean deeming the season to have ended.

Getafe and Valencia have also voiced their displeasure.

As things stand, Getafe are fifth and behind Real Sociedad on goal difference alone.

The Secretary General of the Spanish Football Federation Andreu Camps says, "We must anticipate a hypothesis where the other countries could finish [their seasons] and we cannot.

"Let's imagine that only positives are produced in our competition and not in others, which could finish, unlike us.

"Now is the time to foresee all contingencies."

Camps says the RFEF proposal is designed to give certainty in an extreme situation.

He says they are working towards a legal framework for any hypothetical situations that may arise.

Barcelona head coach Quique Setien is pessimistic that the season can resume.

"Everyone wants to be ready for when the season starts again, but that cannot happen until the health authorities can guarantee that there will be no problems," Setien told radio station RAC1.

"I have read the protocol and the reality is I don't know if it can be carried out as it is written. I think it's unworkable. I think it's very difficult logistically."
