Colm Bonnar ratified as Tipperary senior hurling manager

Colm Bonnar has been confirmed as Tipperary's new senior hurling manager.

The Cashel King Cormac's clubman replaces Liam Sheedy who stepped down after three years at the helm in August.

Bonnar was handed a three-year term of his own following a meeting on Wednesday night of the Tipp management committee.

Willie Maher was also believed to have been in contention, but dropped out of the running to succeed Sheedy.

Talks had reportedly been held too with Liam Cahill, before he decided to stay on as Waterford boss.

Bonnar began his coaching career with Waterford, assisting Justin McCarthy in the early 2000's, and helping the Deise bridge a 39-year gap between Munster titles.

His first solo inter-county gig was with Wexford, taking over from John Meyler in 2008 for an unsuccessful three years.

Bonnar would later take over the Carlow hurlers, helping them win the first ever Joe McDonagh Cup in 2018. That same year, Carlow were promoted to Division 1 of the Allianz Hurling League.

He left Carlow in 2020, and has recently been working with ex-Waterford hurler Padraic Fanning with Dicksboro in Kilkenny.

Bonnar said he's relishing his "proudest" challenge, of taking on the Premier's hurlers.

"I realise that one of the most successful Tipperary teams ever is obviously coming to a natural transition with the departure of Liam Sheedy and the recent retirement of Brendan Maher and I would like to congratulate them on their amazing careers for Tipperary," he said in a statement.

"However, I am confident with the experience still in the current squad and the many successful u20/21 and minor teams over the last number of years, there are many talented hurlers in Tipperary bursting to take their opportunity to be successful at senior level, just like I am as the new manager.

"I will bring to this role, all my playing and managerial experience, my passion for the game and for Tipperary, along with a track record of success and getting the most out of teams and players."
