Arsenal and Liverpool's UEFA Cup final runs

Back in 2001, this week's Team 33 interviewee Markus Babbel was crucial as Liverpool won the UEFA Cup.

The German right-back scored within three minutes to get Liverpool off to a flyer in an eventual 5-4 result over Alaves.

Less memorable for the Premier League clubs was Arsenal's experience in 2000.

Came Unstuck

They too reached the UEFA Cup final. But unfortunately the Gunners came unstuck on penalties against Galatasaray in Copenhagen. Davor Suker, World Cup Golden Boot winner in 1998, and Patrick Vieira missed their kicks.

Ultimately, it would be the first of two losing European finals for Arsene Wenger's Arsenal. And in the first half of his reign, failure to win a European trophy is the one black mark.

This week on Team 33, our resident Arsenal and Liverpool fans Joe Coffey and Jonathan Higgins looked back on those finals.

The lads also looked at where those UEFA Cup runs ended up fitting into the narratives of the time. Indeed, the UEFA Cup (now Europa League) was far more prestigious than it is now.
