Why Liverpool must abandon three at the back

During Liverpool's good run of results, the back three employed by Brendan Rodgers was the bedrock behind the success.

But defeats to Manchester United and Arsenal have exposed frailties and Tony Barrett of The Times thinks it's time to switch back to a four man backline.

Ahead of the FA Cup tie against Blackburn, he told Off The Ball: "I think the time's come that they have to go back to a four and show that they can defend with a four."

Barrett added that it is close to occurring when suspensions and suspicions are taken into account.

"I think if you look at Martin Skrtel and Emre Can, who are unavailable tonight, you've got three centre-backs available and one of those is Kolo Toure and another one is Dejan Lovren. I don't think Liverpool can afford to put them in a three-man defence. For me, Liverpool have to find a way of getting back to a four man defence, maybe with Glen Johnson back at right-back."
