Trippier leaves England squad for disciplinary hearing over betting charge

Kieran Trippier has been released from the England international squad to attend a personal FA hearing over allegedly breaching betting rules last year.

The Athletico Madrid full-back could be facing a ban of up to six-months over the alleged offences back in July 2019, when he was transferred from Tottenham to the La Liga giants.

Trippier insists that he did not place any bets or profit from bets made by anybody else in relation to the transfer.

"I have fully complied with the FA’s investigation over the past several months on a voluntary basis and will continue to do so," said Trippier at the time when the FA misconduct charges were revealed last May.

"I want to make it clear that while a professional footballer, I have at no stage placed any football related bets or received any financial benefit from others betting."

The FA's betting rules state that it is an offence to pass on inside information from which others can benefit.

Former England international Daniel Sturridge was banned after he was found guilty of the same offence, when he gave his brother inside tips on a potential move from Liverpool to Sevilla back in 2018.

Trippier has started England's last four matches and wore the captain's armband in last week's friendly win against Wales.

England boss Gareth Southgate was reluctant to say too much about what he called a "distraction" ahead of their Nations League match against Denmark at Wembley Stadium on Wednesday night.

"There's not much I can say about that," said Southgate. "It’s beyond my control so I have to focus on the job at hand and it’s a chance for another player. It is another distraction."

England are top of their Nations League group after their impressive 2-1 win from behind against Belgium at Wembley Stadium last weekend.
