The Final Whistle: St Patrick's Athletic set record winning run

BOXING

A dominant performance from Joe Ward has seen the Westmeath man through to the gold medal match of the light-heavyweight division at the European Elite Championships in Bulgaria.

He put his Croatian opponent away after a unanimous decision in the ring this evening.

Michael Conlan also upgraded his bronze medal after a successful semi-final. He had a unanimous verdict victory over his Italian opponent.

Dean Walsh, meanwhile was on the wrong end of a unanimous decision but still goes home with a bronze medal.

GOLF

Rory McIlroy shot a 71 to finish on 2-under par after day two of the USPGA Championship at Whistling Straits.

He is five shots off the 7-under lead, which is now held by David Lingmerth, Russell Henley, Jason Day and Matt Jones.

With a score of 1-over looking to be necessary to make the cut, Rory McIlroy will likely shoulder the Irish charge all on his own this weekend.

Shane Lowry and Padraig Harrington could only get to 3-over this afternoon, with Graeme McDowell and Darren Clarke well out of contention.

They ended today on 5-over and 15-over, respectively.
