SSE Airtricity League preview: Four derbies dominate a busy weekend

There are nine matches in the SSE Airtricity League on Friday evening with five in the Premier Division and four First Division encounters. Four of this evening’s matches are derby fixtures.

Premier Division leaders Dundalk face neighbours Drogheda United in the Co Louth derby at Oriel Park. Stephen Kenny’s side dropped their first points of the season last week in Limerick while Drogheda, after winning their opening two games, have only picked up one point from their last four.

Second place Cork City are in Dublin to face St Patrick’s Athletic at Richmond Park. The Saints are four points behind Cork after six games so a win will close that gap to a point and push them firmly back into the group of clubs chasing the leaders.

Third place Shamrock Rovers, who are one of three unbeaten teams in the top flight, are away to Derry City while, at Dalymount Park, Bohemians meet Longford Town having knocked the Midlanders out of the EA SPORTS Cup on Tuesday night.

There is a Connacht derby at Eamonn Deacy Park as Galway United, with just one win from six games, face a Sligo Rovers side still searching for their first league win of the season.

There is a full programme of First Division games with the highlight being the top of the table clash between leaders Finn Harps and second place Athlone Town at Finn Park.

Third meets fourth when Wexford Youths travel to Tolka Park to play Shelbourne while there is a N11 derby at Stradbrook where Cabinteely face UCD. The final game is a Munster derby between Waterford United and Cobh Ramblers at the RSC.

The one match on Saturday evening is a Premier Division clash at the Carlisle Grounds between Bray Wanderers, who notched their first win of the season last week, and Limerick, who are yet to win, but ended Dundalk’s perfect start to the season last time out.
