Sheffield United confirm 'a number' of positive Covid-19 cases

Sheffield United are the latest Premier League club to confirm an outbreak of Covid-19.

The Blades fixture against Burnley goes ahead this evening, however.

Earlier today, the Premier League confirmed it after the latest round of testing of club's players and staff, there were 18 positive cases.

It's understood that a number of the cases could be attributed to the Manchester City outbreak which forced the postponement of the Premier League clash between City and Everton on Monday.

Now, it has emerged that Sheffield United have also suffered an outbreak.

The number of cases has not been specified.

"Sheffield United can confirm the club recorded a number of positive coronavirus tests after the latest round of testing," the club said today in a statement.

"Due to medical confidentiality the club will not be revealing the names of those who have been affected.

"The individuals who have tested positive have now entered into a period of self-isolation in accordance with Premier League and Government guidelines.

"Earlier today, the Premier League confirmed 18 positive coronavirus tests - the highest figure of the season so far.

"Everyone at Sheffield United would like to extend our best wishes to our colleagues and wish them a speedy recovery."

It was also confirmed today that Southampton boss Ralph Hassenhuttl will miss tonight's fixture against West Ham.

He is self-isolating after a member of his household tested positive for the virus.

He will take charge of the team from his home via a video link.
