Rotherham defender handed 10-game ban for verbally abusing James McClean

Kirk Broadfoot has been today handed a 10-match ban for misconduct for using "insulting words towards a member of the opposition" according to an FA statement.

Reports suggest Broadfoot received the ban for sectarian abuse of Irish midfielder James McClean during Rotherham's fixture against Wigan in March and at 10 games, the ban is the longest ever handed out by English football's governing body for verbal abuse.

McClean, who recently made headlines for allegedly turning his back on a rendition of "God Save the Queen", has before made comments about his childhood in Northern Ireland and his Catholic identity.

Rotherham have not commented on the suspension.

The FA said in a statement:

"The charge was that during a league fixture between Rotherham and Wigan Athletic on March 14 2015 Broadfoot used abusive and/or insulting words towards a member of the opposition, in breach of FA Rule E3(1).

"It was further alleged that the breach was an 'Aggravated Breach' as defined by Rule E3(2).

"Broadfoot was also fined £7,500 and ordered to complete an education programme."
