Newcastle United manager Steve Bruce has defended Danny Rose who has received criticism for voicing his concerns over the coronavirus.

Rose spoke in a podcast interview in which he praised Bruce for how he looks after his players but he also criticised plans which would see the Premier League return to action.

The Newcastle full-back, on-loan from Tottenham said: "I could be potentially risking my health for people's entertainment and that's not something I want to be involved in if I'm honest with you."

English top-flight clubs were all allowed to reconvene this week but are only allowed to conduct non-contact training with a view to restarting the league in mid-June.

"He's entitled to his opinion," Bruce told Sky Sports when asked about Rose's criticism of moves to restart the Premier League.

"I don't think there's been anyone more generous towards the cause than Danny and fair play to him.

"He's tried to keep it quiet and got on with it but he's given a hell of a lot of money to the NHS and donated his time.

"He's got his opinions and he's just got to be careful with them and careful which platform he puts them on."

There has been a lot happening with Newcastle off the pitch during the current shutdown and while Bruce admits to being in the dark with regard to the proposed £300m takeover of the club, he would like to stay on.

If the takeover goes through, there should be a huge amount of funds to spend in the transfer market and Bruce believes he could compete with the best at the top of the table if he was chosen to stay in the hot seat.

"Whether you're managing in the lower divisions, in my opinion, or you're at the top, is getting the very best out of what you've got," said Bruce.

"If you can get the best out of what you've got, as in top players, which certainly Pep [Guardiola] and Jurgen [Klopp] and all these people then I would back myself to have a crack at it. I would be confident that I would be able to do it.

"Whether that is going to be the case, who knows."
