REPORT: Paris Saint-Germain to be crowned French champions

French publication L'Equipe are reporting Paris Saint Germain will be crowned champions of the French Ligue 1 even though the season has not been completed.

The French Government earlier this week banned all major sporting events until September.

The Parisians were 12 points clear of Marseille at the top of the table when the league was halted due to the coronavirus pandemic.

French League officials are believed to be set to freeze the tables for Ligue 1 and Ligue 2, which would mean Paris Saint Germain would be awarded the title, Amiens and Toulouse would be relegated, and Lorient and Lens would be promoted.

The European places would be determined by a points per game ratio calculation, with Marseille and Rennes to compete alongside PSG in the Champions League and Lille, Reims and Nice to take Europa League spots.

If this report comes to pass, France will have acted differently to the Netherlands, who decided not to give the title to Ajax Amsterdam, who led AZ Alkmaar on goal difference before the abandonment in Holland.

The model of France does raise the question what will happen in the English Premier League if they cannot complete their 2019-20 season, despite best endeavours.

Will Liverpool be crowned champions? Will there be any relegation? Will Leeds United and West Bromwich Albion be promoted? The Premier League are holding another meeting tomorrow to discuss next steps.
