Rangnick should wage 'war' on Man United players | Pat Nevin

Ralf Rangnick should wage war on the Manchester United 'names', as the interim boss takes charge of a dressing room full of big egos, says Pat Nevin.

The German was confirmed as the new Man United interim boss today.

The 63 year old German will take charge of his first game once his work visa is processed.

He leaves Lokomotiv Moscow to take up his new position.

Rangnick and the club have agreed to a two year consultancy role at Old Trafford from next summer.

Michael Carrick will continue in charge until Rangnick's visa is finalised. This may include Thursday's Premier League game with Arsenal.

Dealing with Cristiano Ronaldo will be high on his agenda as questions remain around the 36-year-old's ability to commit to the high press Rangnick is famous for.

And former Chelsea player Pat Nevin thinks the former RB Leipzig man should wage war against Ronaldo and the rest of the 'names' in the United dressing room if necessary to get results.

"I might be old-school, but I don't care about the name", Nevin said on The Football Show.

"If you're a professional player at a high level, you shouldn't care about the names you're playing with or against, it's who is doing well."

"The top managers don't care about any of that."

"Beckham was undroppable for England. Nobody should be undroppable. It doesn't matter if you're Beckham, Pogba, Varane, Ronaldo, it doesn't matter. If you're not doing the job, you don't get picked."

Ronaldo was dropped by Michael Carrick for Manchester United's 1-1 draw with Chelsea at the weekend, coming off the bench with little impact on the game.

While some pundits like Roy Keane felt the former world player of the year should have started the game, Nevin feels that the top managers of the game would be brave enough to make the call.

"Look at Klopp, he leaves them out. Look at Pep - he doesn't give a stuff who you are. If you're not doing it for a week or two weeks, you're out."

"Thomas Tuchel is probably the best at it right now."

Although Rangnick is only at the club on an interim basis, Nevin doesn't think this will undermine his authority when it comes to dealing with the players.

"If you're Rangnick, you're thinking 'so what? I'm not going to be here in a few months. I might as well do it my way."

Rangnick has made his first comments to the United club website, praising the blend of 'youth and experience' on offer.

“I am excited to be joining Manchester United and focused on making this a successful season for the club.

“The squad is full of talent and has a great balance of youth and experience. All my efforts for the next six months will be on helping these players fulfil their potential, both individually and, most importantly, as a team."

Beyond that, I look forward to supporting the club’s longer-term goals on a consultancy basis.”

United's Football Director John Murtough said:

“Ralf is one of the most respected coaches and innovators in European football. He was our number one candidate for interim manager, reflecting the invaluable leadership and technical skills he will bring from almost four decades of experience in management and coaching.

“Everyone at the club is looking forward to working with him during the season ahead, and then for a further two years in his advisory role.”

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was sacked earlier this month following a string of poor results.

United are currently eighth in the Premier League, 12 points behind leaders Chelsea. They have qualified for the last 16 of the Champions League.
