‘It’s a mess’ | John Giles on Ancelotti - Ferguson dynamic

Carlo Ancelotti should not allow Everton’s assistant manager Duncan Ferguson to give team-talks without his permission, according to John Giles.

The former Republic of Ireland international was speaking on Off The Ball and felt that Ancelotti has made a mistake by keeping Ferguson in the dressing room.

“You have to go back to basics here. What’s Duncan Ferguson doing in the dressing room now and what role does Ferguson have to be able to get stuck into the players?

“If you go into a club you have to have your own men. You have to pick your own men because the manager is the manager. This is my take on it anyway, nobody should say anything in the dressing room without the permission of the manager.

“We know Ancelotti definitely hasn’t employed Duncan Ferguson. Ferguson was there to do a job until a new manager came in. What he’s doing in the dressing room now? I don’t know.

“He shouldn't be there. You’ll find with Duncan making some of the decisions he made in the few matches he was there, there’s no doubt he would’ve made enemies in the squad because he left a few players out,” Giles said.

The former Leeds United midfielder was adamant should have his role minimised and that establishing a new relationship with Ferguson should be a priority for Ancelotti.

“This is a bad start for Ancelotti. When you go into a club, you’re the manager. You’re the only one who can talk at half-time and full-time.

“If you have a second-in-command you can say, ‘Have you got anything to say.’ But it’s with his permission. It’s a mess. He’s got to sort out, first of all, the Duncan Ferguson situation.

“The general principle is he shouldn’t be there. He’s not Ancelotti’s man,” Giles commented.

The Toffees will look to put the disappointment of losing to a young Liverpool side in the Carabao Cup when they take on Brighton this Saturday in the Premier League.
