Manchester United finally confirm Jose Mourinho as manager

Manchester United have shocked the world by announcing Jose Mourinho as the club's new manager. The Portuguese native replaces Louis van Gaal in a move that can only be described as surprising.

The former Chelsea boss has joined the club on a three-year deal with the option of a fourth. He has been out of work since leaving the London club at the end of last year.

Mourinho's pedigree in undoubted, having won the Champions League with Porto and Inter Milan. He has won league titles in Portugal, England, Italy and Spain.

"To become Manchester United manager is a special honour in the game", the 53-year-old told the club's website. "It is a club known and admired throughout the world. There is a mystique and a romance about it which no other club can match."

"I have always felt an affinity with Old Trafford; it has hosted some important memories for me in my career and I have always enjoyed a rapport with the United fans. I’m looking forward to being their manager and enjoying their magnificent support in the coming years."

Mourinho's first match at Old Trafford since being announced as Manchester United's manager happens next week. He will take charge of a England team of former internationals and celebrities in a charity game for Unicef next weekend.
