Liverpool legend appeals to supporters to celebrate at home

Liverpool legend Phil Thompson is no stranger to league title celebrations at Anfield having won many of them as a player in red.

The former defender grew up as a supporter on the Kop and after signing with the club in 1971, he won seven league titles, three European Cups and many other trophies.

The club won another four titles in the 1980s after Thompson left Anfield but after there's been a drought since 1990 which could end next Sunday at Goodison Park, the home ground of their city rivals.

"Liverpool have a fantastic record against Everton. It doesn't matter," Thompson said on Sky Sports.

"Every derby game, I'm sure every Everton supporter was looking forward to it [thinking], 'we're going to beat Liverpool this time'.

"So it's built up. That fan atmosphere at Goodison Park has been vital to Everton."

Sadly there will be no supporters there to watch the match and Liverpool will only have the chance to confirm their status as Premier League champions on the day, if Manchester City are beaten by Arsenal on Wednesday night.

If that doesn't happen and the Reds win the game against Everton, the home clash with Crystal Palace will be match which will see them claim the title with all three points.

The derby was given the green light to go ahead on Merseyside during the week but concerns have been expressed over supporters congregating around Anfield to celebrate, while social distancing guidelines to stop the spread of Covid-19 are still in place.

"I appeal to any Liverpool fans no matter if and when Liverpool win the title, is not to converge on Anfield. I think that has to be right," added Thompson.

"We all have to look at each other and go, we need people to look at us as supporters now and say, 'yes you can trust us'."
