Kevin Kilbane believes it has been vital that Louis van Gaal has been his own man tactically at Manchester United.
The Dutchman has the Reds in good form of late ahead of the derby with a Manchester City side struggling for form.
Van Gaal has had no qualms about sticking to his guns and tonight, Kilbane told Off The Ball that such priorities have been a boost.
"Sometimes you need to play different ways to try and counter-act the opposition and Van Gaal sees it differently from other managers. It can't always be the Ferguson way or the Man United way that you hear a lot of the ex-players harping on about. It's about getting the results," he said.
Kilbane also reviewed Liverpool's narrow win over Blackburn in the FA Cup last night and picked out some of the deficiencies, especially at the back.
