Manchester City are in need of a striker like Harry Kane, and would sign him right now if they could, according to Leeds and Republic of Ireland legend John Giles.

The Tottenham Hotspurs and England captain was heavily linked to a move to the Etihad in the summer last year. However, Daniel Levy and his club were not going to let Kane go cheaply.

Ultimately, City signed Jack Grealish and Kane stayed at Spurs, much to his chagrin, as he missed a number of training sessions at the start of the season.

However, now that Kane has re-found the form that he was in at that end of last season, John Giles believes that Manchester City will want to revisit talks with Spurs for the England captain.

City lost to Kane's Spurs 3-2 in the Premier League on Saturday. It was an injury time header from Kane that sealed the victory for the visitors.

Off the back of a strong performance, Giles believes that City would be more than happy to take Kane in the form that he is in.

"I'd say, 'take him now if you possibly could'," Giles said. "They are missing someone like that. I think it is catching up on them a bit now.

"I think, if they could take him now, they'd take him. If the summer comes around, who knows what's going to happen again?"

City had attempted to secure the services throughout the summer last year. While they were unsuccessful in those attempts, Pep Guardiola's side seemed to be unhindered by the lack of a player like Kane, until now.

"According to City, they made four efforts to get him," Giles said. "Tottenham seemed to be determined not to let him go anyway.

"Then it seemed to be too late for them in the season to try and get somebody else that they wanted in. I think they are paying the price for that now."

City were poor against Spurs

Although Giles believes that City are feeling the absence of a player like Kane at the moment, it was their defence that let them down against Spurs.

"Defensively, they were very, very poor against Spurs," Giles said. "Spurs were good. Spurs were very good on the day, but I thought City's defending was awful.

"The first goal, I think it was Walker trying to play somebody offside, and got caught on it. The second goal you can blame Walker again. He was the defender when the ball came over for Harry Kane's header to win the game.

"A fullback like that should never ever be letting the forward off or should be getting stuck into him to stop him getting the free header at the goal. That will be my opinion on it anyway."
