Kane backs down - England captain confirms he's staying at Spurs

Tottenham Hotspur striker Harry Kane has confirmed in a social media post that he will be staying with the club 'this summer'.

The England captain has been linked with a move to rivals Manchester City since the end of last season and it has been reported that Kane himself wanted to make the move to the Premier League champions, despite having three years of his current six-year deal left to run.

Kane wasn't included in the travelling party for the UEFA Europa Conference League defeat away to Pacos de Ferreira last Thursday, after missing the league opener against City.

He finally made his first appearance of the season last Sunday in the 1-0 win away to Wolves and he thanked the supporters for the reception he received at Molineux.

"It was incredible to see the reception from the Spurs fans on Sunday and to read some of the messages of support I've had in the last few weeks," read Kane's post on Twitter on Wednesday.

"I will be staying at Tottenham this summer and will be 100% focused on helping the team achieve success.

Kane's new boss at the club, Nuno Espirito Santo, has had to take questions on his star man at every press conference since taking charge at the club and things were made even more difficult when the English skipper failed to turn up for pre-season fitness testing.

The 28-year-old argued that he had always been scheduled to return at a later date.

The fact that Kane put 'this summer' in his post on Wednesday leaves the door open for a possible move in January and Espirito Santo could find himself taking some further questions ahead of the derby match against Watford on Sunday.

All eyes will be on the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium for Thursday's second leg in the Europa Conference League play-off against Paços de Ferreira which will be the first time Kane faces a full stadium of Tottenham supporters since it emerged that he was angling for a move to City - who made no secret of their desire to sign him.

It is thought that Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy valued Kane at upwards of £120m, but City had failed to satisfy his demands, having offered £100m in June.
