"Bad judgement, bad coaching, bad management" - John Giles on Liverpool defensive mess at Wembley

Dejan Lovren was the scapegoat for many as Liverpool fell to a 4-1 loss to Tottenham at Wembley on Sunday.

His mistakes certainly were costly but slowly more scrutiny is being placed on manager Jurgen Klopp as Liverpool's defence continues to cause worries.

And John Giles also homed in on that aspect as he joined us for Thursday Night Football.

"The manager has to be responsible for that positional sense and the positional way in which they played because Kane got behind Lovren which should never happen," he said of the Spurs game.

"That was very poor play, no doubt, but I wouldn't blame Lovren completely on that and I think he was told to be in that position from the training ground into the match."

On Klopp's possible thought process for playing such a high line at Wembley, John said: "Bad judgement, bad coaching, bad management because it's no secret that Liverpool do not defend well and that's one of the reasons they don't defend well. Whether he's doing the defensive coaching or not, I don't know but he's the manager so he's responsible for it. But certainly for that [first] goal, it was really bad coaching."

He also felt that Klopp withdrawing Lovren to the subs bench in the first half was "public humiliation" for the player and a "bad move" by the manager.

Meanwhile, John also touched on Pep Guardiola's complaints about the ball used when Manchester City laboured to a penalty shootout win over Wolves in the Carabao Cup in midweek.

"I've never played with any of the modern balls anyway. I think they should all be of the same size and the same weight and it shouldn't matter what division you play in or what competition you play in," he said.

"There should be a standard ball. None shouldn't be lighter or softer or harder than any of the others.

"It seems an unusual complaint [from Guardiola] anyway."

But while John feels Guardiola's complaint is a bit of a storm in a teacup, he touched on the changes to footballs in his era.

"In my day, it was pretty standard and every week you played with the same ball in all competitions but there can be a difference, there's no doubt about that because it could be a bit softer, it could be a bit lighter and I think how light the balls are today, a small difference could make a big difference," he said.

"When I first started as a kid, you had the old leather balls and if it got wet, it could very, very heavy. But by the time I went to England, we were playing with the laceless balls and they were plastic, so they were pretty standard and they were OK."
