John Giles: 'Man United's recent progress stronger than Arsenal's'

John Giles believes the rate of progression at Manchester United in recent weeks will see them outstrip an in-form Arsenal side.

He told Off The Ball that Louis van Gaal has hit upon a suitable game-plan and formation, and has also been impressed by his "presence".

"I think the progress with Van Gaal in recent times is stronger than Arsenal's. They don't play a high line and if he gets the players in the right positions - which I think he has -I think they'll be stronger than Arsenal. And I think they'll beat Man City," said John, who also gave his take on Liverpool - and Mario Balotelli who he branded a "joke".

John was also hugely critical of ex-Wimbledon striker John Fashanu based on the Crazy Gang documentary.

A text from a listener suggested that some of the revelations in the film were "borderline criminal".

"I saw it a while ago and it was disgraceful. [Fashanu] looked like one of the main people who helped to produce that program and Vinnie Jones. They were glorifying all the things they did and even some of the players that they played with at Wimbledon said this never happened," said John.

"[Fashanu] was a total hooligan from what you could see on the documentary."

Meanwhile, John also believes that Crystal Palace manager Alan Pardew is in the conversation to succeed Roy Hodgson as England manager when the current incumbent steps aside. Plus, he also feels that Newcastle were always dysfunctional even in his day.
