'If I am the Liverpool manager, I am signing Aguero' | Stephen Elliott

Liverpool may well be in the hunt for a striker this summer and Stephen Elliott believes Sergio Aguero could be a perfect fit for Jurgen Klopp's side.

Aguero is set to leave Manchester City this year after a decade at the club and Elliott believes that the Argentine is still capable of playing at a high level in the Premier League.

"I mentioned him earlier on, Aguero. If I am the Liverpool manager, I am signing him 100 per cent," Elliott said.

"I watched him today and he still looks hungry in and around the goal. That central striker role, I think he could play in that position for this Liverpool team.

"I know you are talking about signing an ageing player again. You can plan for the future with the signing of some younger players but Liverpool need to do it now.

"I think Aguero could be a massive signing. Whether he would come and sign for a rival of City, I am not sure. It would be a gigantic signing for Liverpool. I think he would lift the place."

Liverpool's defence of their Premier League crown has been lacklustre, to say the least.

The champions are currently in a battle to secure fourth place and if they cannot achieve that they will be playing European football outside of the Champions League next season.

Their dynamic forward lineup of Sadio Mane, Roberto Firmino and Mohamed Salah, who have delighted football fans for the past few years, have failed to hit the heights of years past.

Salah has kept up a high level of performance, however, Mane and Firmino have struggled to have an impact in the Premier League.

Manchester City have wrestled back supremacy at the summit of English football and they have largely done that without Aguero's services as the Argentine goal-machine has struggled to maintain his fitness throughout the season.

Aguero did return to City's starting lineup on Saturday afternoon and found the net with an excellently timed finish as the champions-elect swept Crystal Palace aside, running out 2-0 winners at Selhurst Park.

Pep Guardiola expressed his appreciation to the Argentine for the phenomenal career he has had so far.

"He showed with his goal that he has been what he is," Guardiola said.

"I am in love as a person, he is an incredible guy. Players with less quality than him are more uncomfortable [in front of goal] than huge players like him. What a goal."

Would Aguero have a similar impact at Anfield?

Perhaps a more pertinent question for Klopp and Liverpool supporters is would he be able to adapt to Liverpool's aggressive pressing style?

When this question was put to Elliott, the former Ireland striker dismissed the notion that Aguero couldn't press effectively for Klopp's team.

"Why can't Aguero press? Aguero is good enough to play in any team," Elliott said.

"Liverpool have missed that killer instinct at times, up front. If there is a forward like Aguero [available] you definitely have to be in the mix for these players.

"Manchester City have a bigger and more solid squad than Liverpool. That is probably why they are letting Aguero go.

"Liverpool need to do something. If they make a signing like Aguero it is bound to lift the club and spark a reaction.

"There is no doubt he can go on and score 20 or 25 goals [next year]."

Aguero's strike against Crystal Palace brought him up to 182 Premier League goals and at 32 it stands to reason that the Argentine striker can continue to be as clinical for the next club who secures his services.
