Harry Arter: Mick is a "player's player" and why the Swiss match matters so much

Harry Arter has given a glowing account of Mick McCarthy's management of the Republic of Ireland, calling him a "player's player".

Arter was on co-commentary for Off The Ball this afternoon at the Vitality Stadium, before attention turned to Ireland's next Euro 2020 qualifier against Switzerland.

"We had a chat this morning - I have a slight problem with my ankle at the minute.

"We are just working out potentially what will be the situation with the international break - we're not too sure yet.

"Mick has been great. He kept in contact over the summer. I had to miss the games over the summer, but the dialogue is great with him. He is very understanding.

"He is a player's player - when I say that, he understands players and the position they are in.

"He has been great with me since I've been involved with the setup and since he has come back. Hopefully, if I don't make this squad, then I will be there for the October games.

On the injury that has been troubling him, Arter says that doctors from both club and country are liaising as to the best course of action for his return to Ireland duty.

"They are all working towards the same thing - playing and playing pain-free.

"It is such a long season that you don't want to push yourself for one group of games, then come next month the problem is still there.

"Mick was great and he totally understood."

On the particular match against Switzerland, Harry gave a considered opinion of the Swiss side and what Ireland need to do.

"It's probably important not to lose. We are at home, so pressure will be on us more.

"The Swiss do not get the credit that they deserve, they are in the top ten rankings in the world and have some brilliant individual players."
