Glenn Whelan signs a new one-year extension with Stoke City

Glenn Whelan's spell at Stoke City looks set to enter its tenth year.

The Republic of Ireland midfielder has signed a one-year extension with the club, that will see him stay at the newly named bet365 Stadium until the end of the 2017/18 season. Whelan joined the then Championship side in January 2008. They were promoted the following summer.

The 32-year-old has spent his entire international career as a Stoke City player, making his Ireland debut less than five months after moving to the English midlands. He has made over 300 appearances for the club, with at least 30 league appearances in five of Stoke's eight Premier League seasons.

He is the club's current vice-captain, having deputised for Ryan Shawcross when the English defender is unavailable. The Dubliner has also captained Ireland on numerous occasions.

"Glenn has been one of the mainstays of our side since his arrival and few players can have provided such value for money in the history of the Premier League", Chief Executive Tony Scholes said about the contract extension.

"He remains a key figure in Mark Hughes' squad and we are delighted he has decided to extend his stay at the bet365 Stadium."

Mark Hughes's side begin their Premier League campaign away to Middlesbrough on August 13th
