Steven Gerrard's signings are making Aston Villa worse - Dan Bardell

Steven Gerrard's Aston Villa have been getting worse since January, says Dan Bardell.

Football journalist Dan Bardell joined The Football Show to discuss Steven Gerrard and Aston Villa.

Aston Villa are 15th in the league table. They won one game out of four so far this season.

They lost to Bournemouth, West Ham and Crystal Palace. Steven Gerrard played a full strength team in the League Cup and his only win so far is a poor display in a 2-1 victory over Everton. Frank Lampard's Everton is hardly a scalp to boast about.

Gerrard took over for Dean Smith last season and turned Villa's season around. But now that he is building his own team to move forward with, problems are arising.

In fact, journalist Dan Bardell believes there is a correlation between Gerrard's new signings and Villa getting worse rather than getting better.

"Obviously Steven Gerrard brought a few of his own players in in January," Bardell said.

"And I actually think since January, in 2022 as a whole, we've actually got worse. When he first came in he stabilized us with the players that were already there. I could see what a Steven Gerrard team was. But it seems that the more players that we've had come in that are Gerrard's players, the worse we've got.

"It's just a strange one. It's really felt like a continuation from last season."

"You're looking at the team on paper now and whichever 11 gets wheeled out from game to game, there's only one difference from the end of last season. And that's Kamara the French international in the defensive midfield spot.

"It now feels like last season never ended and we've just carried on. It's just been a really miserable 2022."

With Arsenal and Manchester City next up, Gerrard and his team will likely soon be in a relegation fight. If they're not already in it.

Jordan Henderson, James Milner are past it
