The Football Association of Ireland has confirmed that two members have been proposed for the role of President of the FAI.

Donal Conway was re-elected as president of the association at an AGM last summer.

He stated at the time that he would only serve a one-year term but then announced last month that he would step down in January 2020.

After being nominated by members Martin Heraghty and Gerry McAnaney are set to contest an election at the association's EGM on Saturday, January 25th.

Heraghty was elected to the FAI Board in July of 2019 as a nominee of the National League after being involved with Sligo Rovers FC for a number of years.

He has been president of the club since 2016 and his professional career was in the Civil Service where he was Assistant Secretary General at the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine with specific responsibility for the development of the Irish Food Industry.

Since his retirement, as well as his involvement in football administration, The FAI have say he has been a Board member of a private company and engaged in consultancy work.

Gerry McAnaney then currently represents Football For All on the FAI's National Council, having previously represented the Defence Forces on the FAI's National Council.

He has been involved in football administration for a number of years and has served as an FAI Board of Management Member.

Minister for Sport, Shane Ross, has in recent months repeatedly called for Conway, the only survivor from the previous board, to step down.

Ross has also called for the 79-strong council to be reformed saying he wants to see more democracy in the election of the Council.
