Courtois points finger at Wilmots as Belgium fans applaud Wales into the semi-final

Wales were good value for their money last night as they overcame Belgium on a 3-1 scoreline.

There seemed to be a sense of resignation among the Belgium fans amidst speculation that Marc Wilmots was not up to the job of leading the team to success at Euro 2016, however, and Thibaut Courtois admitted as much when asked after the game about where they went wrong.

Courtois implied that Belgium were out-foxed against Chris Coleman's Wales and suggested that they were handed a golden opportunity that they may never get again.

Asked whether Wilmots should resign, Courtois said he has already given the coach his answer.

‘This was an opportunity we may not get again,’ Courtois told reporters. ‘I gave him my opinion in the dressing room. He has to make his own decision.

‘I pointed the finger where it had to be put after the game. We have to remain intelligent. We’re young and we’re going to still spend a lot of time together. But it’s a disappointment because we had a golden chance to go to the final.

‘It’s the biggest disappointment of my career and I’ve played in the final of the Champions League. We started the game well, we created two or three chances and we got the goal. But afterwards we fell back into our half, we left too much space and we couldn’t hit back.

‘Wales had more chances than us and were more dangerous. They controlled the match and we felt like we couldn’t create any chances.’

The Belgian fans, on the other hand, were far less bitter and even offered Welsh fans a guard of honor as they march into the semi-finals to take on Portugal on Wednesday .
