Chris Forrester named captain of Peterborough

Chris Forrester has been having a very strong season at Peterborough in League One, after making the move from the League of Ireland last September.

He played 35 times for the club in the course of the season, finding the back of the net twice, but his overall performances have already earned him a player of the year award from BBC Radio

On Tuesday, his maiden season was marked by another fantastic honour which shows the esteem in which he is held at the club, as he was named captain for the coming season.

Manger Grant McCann told the club's official website that while Forrester is not the type of player to go around screaming and shouting, his qualities on the ball and on the pitch make him the perfect candidate:

"The reason I chose Chris was because of his temperament and his character, two attributes that I feel will make him a good leader. His ability is there for all to see on the pitch."

"He might not be the most vocal man, but what he does on the pitch inspires others and when he speaks, the team listen.

"I said to Chris, 'just be yourself, there is no need to change' and I am confident he will take it in his stride. He played an awful lot of games last year with the Irish season into a full Football League campaign, so he will be able to cope with this league season no problem," McCann said.

Forrester has yet to fully break into the Ireland squad; although he was involved in Martin O'Neill's setup for the friendlies against Switzerland and Slovakia, he didn't make the final selection for the games.

However, given his run of form, and with an eye on World Cup qualification, there's every chance that he may be one of the new players who gets called up to help Ireland make it to Russia in 2018.
