Bournemouth considering legal action against Hawk-Eye over relegation

Bournemouth are set to discuss the possibility of launching legal action against Hawk-Eye due to an error it made during a game between Sheffield United and Aston Villa.

Eddie Howe’s team have been relegated to the Championship after Villa finished the 2019-20 season one point ahead of them.

A 3-1 victory over Everton was not enough to keep Bournemouth up due to Villa's draw against West Ham on the final day.

With just a point separating the two teams at the bottom of the table, Villa's survival came down to the smallest of margins and Bournemouth believe a goal-line technology mistake may have ultimately cost them a place in the league.

During a match between the Sheffield United and Villa on June 17th, the home side appeared to score a legitimate goal when Villa goalkeeper Orjan Nyland seemed to carry the ball over his own line from a deep cross.

The Blades had a goal ruled out when Villa goalkeeper Orjan Nyland caught a free-kick and stepped back over the line carrying the ball with him.

Hawk-Eye released a statement apologising after a blunder which was not detected by their goal-line technology system.

It was said after the match that all seven cameras focused on the goal area had been "occluded" and that it was the first time in over 9,000 matches that its cameras had been obstructed to such an extent that the technology could not detect that a goal had been scored.

It is understood the Bournemouth board will discuss whether to pursue legal action this week. No lawyers have been instructed. However, the club's board is scheduled to meet in the next few days on the subject.

The board will also discuss the future of Eddie Howe as manager, a role he has held consistently since 2012.

The Premier League declined to comment, while Hawk-Eye has yet to respond to a request for a comment.
