Bohs title ambitions hurt by Sheridan's parting shot for Waterford

John Sheridan's final act as Waterford FC boss has been to dent the title hopes of Bohemians.

A deflected shot from Ali Coote and a free-kick on the stroke of half-time from Tyreke Wilson were enough to give the Blues a 2-0 win at Dalymount.

Bohs had started well, with Danny Mandroiu - in for Keith Ward - testing ex-Gypsie Brian Murphy in the Waterford goal.

But midway through the half, Sheridan's side were in front. Ali Coote broke from midfield, firing a shot that clipped Dan Casey and took a bounce off the turf which saw it evade Stephen McGuinness in the Bohs goal.

If McGuinness was unfortunate for the first goal, he could do little to prevent the second. From 25-yards out, Wilson whipped a free-kick left-footed just inside the keeper's left-hand upright.

The discipline and pressing that had served Bohs so well since the league's restart was missing, with Mandroiu's petulant yellow card summing up their efforts prior to the break.

While Bohs chased the game in the second half, Waterford nearly put it well beyond their reach.

Another Wilson free-kick met the base of the post with McGuinness flailing.

Ward and Promise Omochere were sent on to chase the game, but there was little they could do to break down a resolute Waterford defence.

Should the game prove to be Sheridan's last, he's left Waterford on a high. Back-to-back wins against big Dublin sides without conceding a goal leave them 3rd in the SSE Aitricity Premier Division.
