Atletico Madrid confirm two positive COVID tests ahead of Champions League

Atletico Madrid have confirmed two positive cases of COVID-19 have been detected at the club.

Diego Simeone's side are set to play Red Bull Leipzig in the Champions League this week in Lisbon.

The Spanish club have said that two members of their "first team and travelling party" have tested positive for COVID.

Both individuals who tested positive are self-isolating at home but were part of their delegation headed to Lisbon.

It is not clear if they are players or members of staff.

Further tests will be carried out on the first team and members of the club's travelling party, along with close contacts of those who tested positive.

A club statement confirmed the news, which stated (via Google translate): "All members of the first team and the club's travelling party to Lisbon underwent PCR tests at the Ciudad Deportiva de Majadahonda as required by UEFA protocol to participate in the quarter-finals of the Champions League.

"Among the results known today, two positive cases have appeared, which are isolated in their respective homes, and which were immediately communicated to the Spanish and Portuguese health authorities, UEFA, the Royal Spanish Football Federation, the Portuguese Federation and the Higher Sports Council.

The statement adds: "The club will coordinate the new schedules with UEFA and as soon as there is a new plan it will be made public. We also request the utmost respect for the identity of the two positive cases."
